ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS Founded in 1986 through a collaboration with Leonard N. Stern, Chairman of the Hartz Group, Mayor Ed Koch of the City of New York, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Homes for the Homeless (HFH) has spent the last 20 years providing support and direct services to homeless families. As the largest single non-profit operator of homeless shelters in New York City, Homes for the Homeless runs five American Family Inns, and serves up to 600 families every night. HFH knows that homelessness is largely an education issue, and we help homeless families by addressing their educational and social needs, while simultaneously aiding them in their search to find housing. HFH offers Adult Basic Education classes, GED-prep and job-training classes. At the same time, HFH focuses much of its resources on children, providing them with K-12 enrichment, including homework help and after-school recreation programs. Our goal is to help these children develop the skills and the confidence necessary to perform as well in school and in life as their non-homeless peers. Homes for the Homeless offers a summer camp program, to provide homeless children with a summer filled with opportunities to explore nature, make friends, laugh and play, Since 1989, HFH has run three 16-day camping sessions for up to 1,000 children every summer. Much like independent for-profit summer camps, HFH's camps offer a true summer camp experience: there are hiking trails, a swimming lake, boats for rowing and a variety of arts and nature activities.
